ROMAN NUMERALS
- This numeric system originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe.
- Numbers in this system are represented by combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet.
- Generally we use these numerals for writing numbers, showing a serial order or rank and also we see these numerals on the faces of some watches or clocks.
- These Roman Numerals are based on 7 symbols as shown below-

- · The letter ‘I’ is used to represent the number 1.

symbol for zero and the value of symbol did not change with its place.
REPRESENTATION
OF ROMAN NUMERALS
Following points are important to learn how to
represent the roman numerals, just remember those.
1 1.
Only
symbols I or X is written or repeated consecutively for maximum of two or three
times and their total sum is equal to the number they make.
Ex: II = 1 + 1 = 2
III = 1 + 1 + 1
= 3
XXX = 10 + 10 +
10 =30
2 2. When either of the symbol I or V
is written on the right of the symbol
of a bigger number, its value is added
to the value of the bigger number.
Ex: VI = 5 + 1 = 6
XVIII = 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 18
XII = 10 + 1 + 1 =12
3 3. When I is written on the left of V or X, then its value is subtracted from the value of V or X.
However, the symbol I is not written more than once before V or X. Also remember that the symbol V is not written to the left.
Ex: IV = 5 – 1 = 4
IX = 10 – 1 = 9
IIX = 10 – 1 – 1 = 8 [it is wrong]
